Veganuary - The Skincare Edit

With January comes a fresh chance, a time to reflect and reset and try something new. And with this air of change circulating, brings Veganuary.

What is Veganuary?

“Veganuary is a UK non-profit organization that promotes veganism by encouraging people to follow a vegan lifestyle for the month of January.” In 2020, 400,000 people pledged to go vegan, this year a record-breaking 500,000 have pledged to follow a Vegan diet! And the number of people switching to a vegan lifestyle in the UK is growing.

Veganuary was one of the reasons, I went vegan three years ago and I’m not leaving! Don’t let society fool, we vegans eat GOOD! Real good! (Stay tuned for more information on this).

During Veganuary, as well as swapping to a plant-based diet, you can also feed your skin all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals it needs with vegan skincare. Vegan skincare means that products do not contain animal-derived ingredients or animal by-products. Here are a few commonly used skincare ingredients that are not vegan-friendly.

What skincare ingredients are not vegan?

  1. Beeswax - our juicy, long-lasting lip balm Sweet Orange is made with fruit waxes instead of beeswax. It helps to seal in moisture to the lips without the dreaded product build up, imparting a creamy, glistening texture and feel.
  2. Lanolin – a thick, waxy like substance typically used as an emollient in body creams, lip balms and hand creams, it’s a naturally occurring substance extracted from sheep’s wool.
  3. Milk protein aka Casein – derived from the milk of cows and is often used in hair and skincare products.
  4. Honey – Made by honeybees, this ingredient is a typically used in body creams and hair care products.

Why make the swap to vegan skincare?

The myth often found circulating the beauty and skincare industry is that vegan skincare cannot be high-performance skincare, with The Glowcery products, this is not the case. Take our hero product Clean Greens, a superfood serum made with 18 antioxidant-rich, cold-pressed (this indicates high quality freshness) vegetable, fruit and nut oils. It contains calming hemp seed oil, nourishing broccoli seed oil, protecting green tea oils and healing tamanu oil. Blended together to create a plant-potent serum that helps to brighten the appearance of hyperpigmentation and acne scars, lock in moisture and give your skin back its natural glow. Clean Greens has been tried, tested (never on furry friends) and loved by hundreds of our Glow Community, no animal product in sight.

Choosing vegan skincare can be greener on your skin and the Planet. At The Glowcery we offer a refill option for our Clean Greens, that comes with a recyclable aluminium cap instead of the dropper pipette. Our lip care products: juicy, moisturising Sweet Orange lip balm and exfoliating Coconut Crumble lip scrub are housed in aluminium tins, aluminium is a material that can be infinitely recycled. As if that wasn’t green enough our postal boxes are made from a minimum of 75% recycled fibres and our postal tape is made from 100% sustainably sourced kraft paper. As well as being vegan, we are also cruelty-free, which means are products do not contain ingredients or manufacturing methods that involve animal testing.

If you’re looking to take part in Veganuary this year, vegan skincare is a great place to start, after all your skin is your largest organ, choose to feed it with vegan, nutrient-dense, superfood skincare.
